Unforgiveable Sin

This morning I woke up and did what I normally do: get up, let the dogs out, let the dogs in, check my mail, and then check the news.

So as I was reading through the normal sites I go to for the news, the same I list on this blog on the lower left, I stumbled upon a site that caught me off guard. The ironic thing was that as I went to post it on The Mind of a Young Pastor, in reference to an earlier discussion, I noticed someone else was talking about this unforgivable sin.

The sin is to deny the holy spirit residence within your life. The website advocates people to do just that. Called "The Blasphemy Challenge" they are willing to offer you a free dvd of their thoughts in return for a person to upload a video of themselves denying the Holy Spirit.

The crazy thing? People are doing it. Not just anyone however, sinners and saved alike. This brings me back to the topic of "Once Saved Always Saved". See it is in my opinion that a true Christian can lose their salvation. I believe that God gave us free will, and to say that a person cannot choose to change their mind after they became a Christian is to say that you lose your free will after you choose salvation.

Once saved always saved means that after you choose to ask forgiveness from your sins, or repent, you no longer have free will. This also leads into predestination, if you believe once saved always saved, your forced to believe you have no free will, which means that God chooses who goes to heaven and who does not. Predestination is to say that Christ didn't come to die for everyones sin, just those that God wants to save. This is absurd.

In closing, I feel it is important to note that the only unforgivable sin, is forgivable. What makes it unforgivable? Well if you denounce the Holy Spirit from your life, and you die, your screwed. However, if you denounce the Holy Spirit, and later in life come to the conclusion you are wrong, Christ will forgive, and thus, the sin has been forgiven.

The verse that this debate comes from is Mark 3:29 "But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin." Remember, when reading this you must take into account not only the verse, but the context and the rest of scripture.

Wow, I posted on the same subject today. Great minds think alike.

"Once saved always saved means that after you choose to ask forgiveness from your sins, or repent, you no longer have free will."
"Predestination is to say that Christ didn't come to die for everyones sin.."

Deconstruction at it's best. Congrats.

I digress, while I don't know alot about this "unpardonable sin," I do think that there might be more to it than simply "denying the Holy Spirit." furthermore, I think that it is actually unpardonable, as Matthew 22:32 says he will not be forgiven "in this age, or in the age to come."

Interesting subject to say the least.

"its my blog and i can post what i wish."

Preach on brother!! What's a blog if you can't rant once in a while? :)

For anybody's interest I have a blogsite against the blasphemy challenge here.

I was always told that Blaspheming against the Holy Spirit entails attributing that which is of God, to Satan. Is this not so?

Definition: (from wordreference.com)

blasphemy - (noun)
Profanation, desecration, sacrilege

-blasphemous behavior; the act of depriving something of its sacred character; "desecration of the Holy Sabbath"

blasphemous language (expressing disrespect for God or for something sacred)

Merriam-Webster says:
1 a: the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for God b: the act of claiming the attributes of deity
2 : irreverence toward something considered sacred or inviolable

Giving praise to the devil, that belongs to God wouldn't really be blasphemy, I dont think. Granted a person would be confused to do so, but alas, thats the world we live in.
