Game Review - Evony

Evony is a new game that launched in the spring of this year, and it is still growing. Evony is a massive multiplayer online real time strategy game (MMORTS), which means that the in game clock runs at the same pace as the clock on your computer. To those that know how to dominate the world with the board game Risk, and know how to earn resources like in Settlers of Catan, Evony brings you up to date with technology.

The world is constantly growing, and your city never sleeps. While your offline, your cities continue to be built, and your gold piles up. Your kingdom automatically saves, which is great for those who like to play games at work (there's also a great feature to change the name of your tab or window, so your boss doesn't catch you goofing off). You can build your kingdom in any of the sixteen different states, and then find an alliance or guild for protection from other players. Which brings up another great feature: you dont have to worry about the guy who goes around killing the newbs, because Evony provides you with a 7-day protection when you first start playing.

Game play is simple. When you first open an account with an online game, things can be confusing, so the easiest way to learn is to follow the quests. The quests are designed to get you up and on your feet, usually with a time to spare before your 7-day protection wears off. The rewards to the quests arent small either, they give you more than you would expect, making it easier to build your kingdom. If your familiar with MMORTS, you can quickly build up your city and end the protection early, allowing you to jumping right into battle!

If you want to be ahead of your peers in the world of Evony, you do have the option to spend real cash to get you up and running, however it is not necessary. In fact, many of the rewards to the first quests actually give you money to spend in the game, as well as other items to speed up game play! Items you receive can speed up the completion time of your buildings, cut the time for creating your army, and even teleport your city to a new location.

Never have I seen a game that gives you so much for free! You start out with one city and you can build or conquer up to 9 separate cities. You control your income through taxation, and building up different resources. You can conquer neighboring valleys which will also increase your productions, and increase your wealth. There is a market place to sell or buy goods, an academy to increase the traits of your army, even an warehouse to store your resources in case of an attack.
